Richard and Michael Freedman

Sydney brothers Richard and Michael Freedman will be joining Highclere Australia’s roster of trainers for the first time with English import Olympic Theatre.

Making up half of the famous Freedman Brothers Incorporated (FBI) along with Victorian-based brother Anthony (also a Highclere trainer) and recent Queensland returnee Lee, the FBI team prepared five Melbourne Cup winners – two with Makybe Diva and one each with Subzero, Doriemus and Tawrrific – and scored countless Group 1 wins in their two-decade partnership. Some of the biggest names associated with them include Super Impose, Naturalism, Mahogany, Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur, Paris Lane and Schillaci.

After becoming renowned the nation over for his insights as a racing and sports broadcaster, Richard ended a 15-year hiatus by once again joining the training ranks in 2017 and was soon joined by Michael, who returned to Sydney having enjoyed tremendous success during a 10-year stint in Singapore and Hong Kong.

In just two seasons since they reunited, they have returned to the peak of their powers. In 2021, they won the world’s richest juvenile race, the Gr.1 Golden Slipper, with Stay Inside, while three-year-old filly Forbidden Love was a runaway winner of the Gr.1 Surround Stakes. With their stable growing significantly in size over the past 12 months, they are set to play a big role in Australian racing in the seasons ahead.
