  • Great House (IRE) is shaping as Highclere Australia's potential flagbearer for the years ahead after scoring a second Rosehill win in early June, having won at the track at his second Australian start in January. While the June win came over 1500m to follow the January victory at 2000m, he looks the type who will only improve once he can get out to a mile and a half.

The promising four-year-old has now had five Australian starts for two wins, two thirds and a fourth to go along with his victory at Limerick and his second on debut at Gowran Park pre-import.

Purchased by Highclere Australia for £175,000 (approx AUD$320,000) at the Tattersalls Online August Sale last year, the son of Galileo was of particular note as he was born on December 28, 2016. That meant that he was classed as a year older than he actually is, at least in the northern hemisphere, which made him an ideal candidate for the southern hemisphere.

The Coolmore-bred half-brother to French Group 3 winner Aboulie (Exceed And Excel) and the placed Rifqah (Elusive Quality), the dam of Group winner and sire Mustajeeb (Nayef), was offered by trainer Donnacha O’Brien under the banner of Bawnmore Racing. Most excitingly, he is 3x3 in-bred to the great blue hen Allegretta, her third dam; Allegretta is the dam of Urban Sea, who herself produced Galileo and Sea The Stars, while she appears in the pedigrees of Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet, The Derby hero Masar and Irish Derby victor Santiago.

Harry Herbert, chairman and managing director of Highclere, said: "I had spent a bit of time with Donnacha, which was fascinating, and he had mentioned this being a horse who was of interest, particularly as he’s perfect for Australia. He’s had to run against older horses when he’s really only three, he’s done very well and is absolutely gorgeous-looking.

"We’ve had a good time with the Australian syndicates since we took Libran out there, we had a nice winner with another Tattersalls purchase, Lord Belvedere, and have others like Bartholomeu Dias in training. I hadn’t bought a horse online before and it’s all quite quick, but I’d have thought Great House would go straight down there now and we’ll decide on a trainer."

The lucky trainer was Chris Waller, who had prepared some of Highclere's best horses in Australia like Libran and Opinion. With Great House, the Waller-Highclere partnership may be looking towards a third Melbourne Cup runner.
